Lamperi Royal Botanical Park
Lamperi Royal Botanical Park, located about 30 km from Thimphu on the way to Punakha, is one of the best places in Bhutan for nature lovers and birdwatchers. Spread over 47 square kilometers, the park is famous for its diverse flora, including more than 40 species of rhododendrons that bloom in spring, turning the hillsides into a colorful paradise.
For bird watchers, Lamperi is a rewarding stop. The park is home to over 200 species of birds, such as the Fire-tailed Sunbird, Satyr Tragopan, Rufous-necked Hornbill, and various species of flycatchers and warblers. The mix of broadleaf and conifer forests provides excellent birding opportunities, especially in the early morning when the forest comes alive with bird calls.
In addition to birding, the park features scenic walking trails, a lake at its center (Baritsho), and viewpoints that overlook the Himalayan ranges. It’s a great way to combine cultural travel between Thimphu and Punakha with nature exploration.
