Acute Mountain Sickness

Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS) in Bhutan: What Trekkers Need to Know

Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS) is a common condition that can affect trekkers and travelers at high altitudes. In Bhutan, many trekking routes reach elevations above 3,000 meters (9,800 ft), where the oxygen level in the air begins to decrease. Understanding AMS is essential for a safe and enjoyable trekking experience.

What is Acute Mountain Sickness?

AMS occurs when your body doesn’t acclimatize properly to high altitude. It can affect anyone, regardless of age, fitness level, or trekking experience.

Common Symptoms:

  • Headache
  • Nausea or loss of appetite
  • Dizziness or light-headedness
  • Fatigue or weakness
  • Shortness of breath
  • Difficulty sleeping

These symptoms usually appear within 6–24 hours of reaching high altitude.

How to Prevent AMS

Bhutanese trekking itineraries are often designed with gradual altitude gain to help prevent AMS. However, it’s important to take personal precautions:

  • Ascend slowly: Don’t gain more than 500 meters (1,600 ft) in sleeping elevation per day once above 3,000 meters.
Stay hydrated: Drink plenty of water, but avoid alcohol and caffeine.
  • Rest well: Avoid overexertion in the first few days.
  • Acclimatization days: Choose itineraries with planned rest days to help your body adjust.

Know your body: Don’t ignore early symptoms — speak to your guide if you feel unwell.

What to Do if You Get AMS

If symptoms are mild, resting and hydrating can help. For moderate to severe symptoms:

  • Descend to a lower altitude immediately
  • Inform your guide or trekking team
  • Medication such as Diamox (acetazolamide) may be used under medical advice
  • Emergency evacuation may be arranged in rare cases
