Phajoding Monastery Hike

Phajoding Monastery Hike

Perched high above the Thimphu Valley at an altitude of around 3,600 meters, Phajoding Monastery is one of Bhutan’s most sacred and spiritually significant sites. This 13th-century monastic complex, founded by the revered Tibetan saint Phajo Drugom Zhigpo, offers not only profound religious importance but also breathtaking panoramic views and a sense of deep serenity.

The journey to Phajoding is an experience in itself. The trail starts from Motithang in upper Thimphu and takes hikers through a pristine pine and rhododendron forest. The moderate hike takes about 2.5 to 4 hours uphill, depending on pace and fitness level. Along the way, visitors are treated to fresh mountain air, birdsong, fluttering prayer flags, and occasional glimpses of Thimphu Valley far below.

Though the climb is steady, it is not technical, and with proper pacing, even casual hikers can manage it comfortably. The reward at the top is more than worth the effort.
