2. Thimphu:
Buddha Dordenma: The Buddha Dordenma, also known as the “Buddha Point,” is a massive statue of Buddha Shakyamuni in the Kingdom of Bhutan. It is located atop a hill in Kuensel Phodrang Nature Park overlooking the capital city of Thimphu.The statue stands at a height of 51.5 meters (169 feet), making it one of the largest Buddha statues in the world. It is made of bronze and gilded in gold.
Weekend Market (Now Kaja Throm): A vibrant and bustling market where locals gather to sell fresh produce, traditional snacks, handmade crafts, textiles, incense, and other Bhutanese products. Tashichho Dzong: Tashichho Dzong is a majestic fortress and monastery located on the banks of the Wang Chhu River in Thimphu. Serving as the seat of Bhutan’s government and the summer residence of the monastic body, it is a striking example of traditional Bhutanese architecture. The dzong houses the throne room of the King and various government offices. Visitors can admire its impressive structure, beautifully landscaped gardens, and peaceful surroundings, especially in the evening when the dzong is illuminated.
3. Punakha:
Punakha Dzong: Punakha Dzong, also known as Pungtang Dechen Photrang Dzong, is one of the most beautiful and important dzongs in Bhutan. One of the most iconic dzongs in Bhutan is situated at the confluence of the Pho Chhu (father) and Mo Chhu (mother) rivers, the dzong is an architectural masterpiece with intricate woodwork and vibrant murals. It is arguably one of the most beautiful dzongs in the country. Punakha Dzong is renowned for its impressive architectural design, characterized by whitewashed walls, red-wood beams, and traditional Bhutanese-style roofs.
Chimi Lhakhang: Known as the Fertility Temple, Chimi Lhakhang is dedicated to the Divine Madman, Lama Drukpa Kunley. It is renowned for its unusual blessing rituals and the widespread display of phallic symbols, which are believed to ward off evil and bring fertility and good fortune. The short walk through beautiful rice fields to reach the temple adds to its charm.
4. Gangtey (Phobjikha Valley):
Nature Walks: The Gangtey Nature Trail is a beautiful and relatively short hiking trail located in Bhutan. Starting from the Mani stone wall to the north of the Gangtey Gonpa, the trail takes you through a pine forest and small bamboo plants, offering stunning views of the surrounding nature. The hike typically takes about 1 hour and 30 minutes to complete. It ends at Khewa Lhakhang, where you can explore the local school and Gangtey Goemba, a famous landmark structure in the Phobjikha valley.
Gangtey Monastery: Perched on a hilltop overlooking the serene Phobjikha Valley, Gangtey Monastery (also known as Gangtey Goempa) is one of the most important Nyingma Buddhist monasteries in Bhutan. Founded in the 17th century, it is both a spiritual center and the starting point for scenic nature trails. The monastery offers breathtaking views of the valley and plays a key role in the annual Black-Necked Crane Festival, held to honor the endangered birds that migrate to the area each winter.
