Mebar Tsho - The Burning Lake

Mebar Tsho, meaning “The Burning Lake,” is a sacred site located in the Tang Valley of Bumthang. It is believed to be the place where the great treasure revealer Terton Pema Lingpa discovered hidden religious treasures in the 15th century. According to legend, he plunged into the lake holding a burning butter lamp and emerged with the lamp still alight—hence the name. Today, Mebar Tsho is considered a pilgrimage site, and visitors often offer butter lamps and prayers at the water’s edge. Surrounded by cliffs and fluttering prayer flags, the lake exudes a mystical and peaceful atmosphere.
