Merak

Merak – Journey into the Highland Life of Eastern Bhutan

Tucked away in the remote folds of the eastern Himalayas, Merak is one of Bhutan’s most unique and culturally preserved villages. Located in the Trashigang district, this isolated valley is home to the Brokpa people, a semi-nomadic highlander community known for their yak-herding lifestyle, distinct dialect, customs, and striking traditional attire.

Visiting Merak is like stepping back in time—where age-old traditions are still very much alive and nature remains wild and unspoiled.

The Brokpas are renowned for their warm hospitality and strong connection to nature. Their clothing, especially the unique woolen hat with five tail-like extensions (known as “tsipey”), is iconic. They follow animistic and Buddhist beliefs, often centered around the mountains and local deities.
