Sangchhen Dorji Lhuendrup Lhakhang Nunnery – A Spiritual and Artistic Sanctuary in Punakha

Perched high on a ridge overlooking the lush valleys of Punakha and Wangdue Phodrang, the Sangchhen Dorji Lhuendrup Lhakhang Nunnery is both a center for spiritual practice and a place for women’s empowerment in Bhutan. Built in traditional Bhutanese architectural style, the nunnery’s gleaming white walls and golden rooftops stand out against the backdrop of the Himalayas.

The nunnery was built with the vision of creating a space where Buddhist nuns could study, meditate, and learn skills for self-sufficiency. It houses a large and majestic statue of Avalokiteshvara (Chenrezig), one of the biggest in the country, along with statues of Guru Padmasambhava and Zhabdrung Ngawang Namgyel.

The Sangchhen Dorji Lhuendrup Lhakhang Nunnery is more than a religious site — it’s a living example of Bhutan’s efforts to preserve spirituality while empowering women. Visitors are rewarded with a peaceful atmosphere, inspiring views, and meaningful cultural encounters.
