Centenary Farmers Market (Now Kaja Throm)

Kaja Throm: A Vibrant Hub of Bhutanese Agriculture in Thimphu

For years, the Centenary Farmers Market stood as Thimphu’s central hub for fresh produce and local goods. Today, it has evolved into something even more dynamic—Kaja Throm. Reimagined as an open-air food and cultural street, this riverside space continues to serve the community, now with a vibrant new look and purpose.

Once a bustling traditional farmers market, the site was transformed into Kaja Throm as part of Bhutan’s effort to promote youth entrepreneurship, local food culture, and community engagement. The term “Kaja Throm” literally means “Food Market” in Dzongkha, and that’s exactly what it has become—a lively, weekend-only food and art street in the heart of Thimphu.

Although the format has changed, the soul of the Centenary Farmers Market lives on. Farmers still sell seasonal fruits, vegetables, dairy, and organic products during the day. But as the sun sets, Kaja Throm transforms into a buzzing food street where the aroma of Bhutanese cuisine fills the air.
