Bhutan Visa Information: Requirements and Fees

Planning your trip to Bhutan? This guide simplifies the visa process and explains the Sustainable Development Fee (SDF) to ensure a hassle-free journey to the Land of Happiness.

Do You Need a Visa to Visit Bhutan?

Yes, all foreigners need a Bhutan visa, which your tour operator will arrange as part of the package. However, Indian nationals do not need a visa but must obtain a travel permit to enter Bhutan, which will be arranged by your tour operator as part of your travel package.  Here’s how you can obtain one:

Book Through a Licensed Tour Operator

  • Bhutan’s visa process is unique. It is necessary to book through a local tour operator for a smooth, enriching, and culturally immersive trip to the Land of the Thunder Dragon.
  • Once you book, your tour operator will handle the visa application on your behalf.

Provide Required Documents
To process your visa, you’ll need to submit:

  • A copy of your passport (valid for at least six months) in JPEG/PNG format.
  • A recent digital passport photo in JPEG/PNG format.
  • Your intended arrival and departure dates.

Visa Processing Time

  • The visa approval process typically takes 2-3 working days once the application is submitted.

Visa on Arrival

  • After approval, you’ll receive a visa clearance letter.
  • Present this letter at Paro International Airport to get your visa stamped on arrival.

What is the Bhutan Sustainable Development Fee (SDF)?

When visiting Bhutan, all international tourists are required to pay the Sustainable Development Fee (SDF), a government-imposed charge designed to promote sustainable tourism. This fee supports various development projects within Bhutan, and it is a mandatory, non-negotiable payment that must be made before you can enter the country. Please note, the SDF is not included in the tour cost.

When You Must Pay the SDF and Visa Fee

Both the SDF and visa fee must be paid in advance as part of the visa application process. Bhutanese immigration requires these fees to ensure a smooth visa approval.

SDF for International and Regional Tourists

  • International Tourists: The SDF is USD 100 per person, per night. Children between 6 and 12 years old pay a reduced rate of USD 50 per night, while children under 6 are exempt.
  • Regional Tourists (Indian Nationals): For Indian nationals, the SDF is Nu. 1,200 per person, per night, or the equivalent in Indian Rupees. Children between 6 and 12 years old pay Nu./INR 600 per night, and children under 6 do not pay any SDF. For Bangladeshi nationals, the SDF is USD 15 per person, per night.

Purpose of the Sustainable Development Fee (SDF)

  1. Environmental Conservation: The SDF helps fund Bhutan’s efforts to protect its pristine environment, ensuring that tourism leaves minimal impact on natural ecosystems.
  2. Cultural Preservation: The fee supports initiatives to preserve Bhutan’s rich cultural heritage and traditional practices.
  3. Socio-economic Development: By paying the SDF, tourists contribute directly to projects that improve the quality of life for Bhutanese citizens.
  4. Infrastructure Improvement: Revenue from the SDF goes toward enhancing infrastructure for both tourists and locals, improving facilities throughout the country.

Visa and SDF Payment
The Visa fee is USD 40 & SDF is typically included in the overall tour package when you book through a licensed Bhutanese tour operator. Your tour operator will consolidate these payments and manage the process for you.

Benefits of Paying the SDF
By paying the SDF, you contribute to Bhutan’s commitment to high-quality, sustainable tourism. This fee helps maintain the country’s natural beauty, cultural heritage, and infrastructure, ensuring a memorable experience for all visitors. Your contribution directly supports Bhutan’s philosophy of Gross National Happiness, benefiting both the local community and the environment.
