Gangtey Monastery: The Serene Sanctuary of Phobjikha Valley

Perched on a hilltop overlooking the wide glacial valley of Phobjikha, Gangtey Monastery, also known as Gangtey Goemba, is one of Bhutan’s most important and iconic religious sites. With sweeping views of the pristine valley below and a rich spiritual heritage, this 17th-century monastery is both a cultural treasure and a serene retreat for those seeking peace and insight.

Gangtey Monastery belongs to the Nyingma school of Tibetan Buddhism, the oldest of the four major schools. It was founded in 1613 by Pema Thinley, the grandson of the great Bhutanese saint Pema Lingpa, who was a treasure revealer and an important figure in Bhutanese spiritual history.

The monastery is the seat of the Gangtey Tulku, the spiritual leader believed to be the reincarnation of Pema Lingpa. It continues to serve as an active center of learning and meditation for monks and is deeply revered by the local community.
