Jakar Dzong - The Fortress of the White Bird

Jakar Dzong, also known as the “Fortress of the White Bird,” is one of the largest and most impressive dzongs (fortresses) in Bhutan. Located in the Bumthang Valley, it serves as a vital administrative and religious center. Perched on a ridge overlooking the Chamkhar Valley, Jakar Dzong provides stunning views of the surrounding landscape, enhancing its allure for visitors.

Jakar Dzong was originally constructed in 1549 by the great grandfather of the first Shabdrung, Ngagi Wangchuk, after he saw a white bird perched on the ridge, which was considered an auspicious sign. The current structure dates back to 1667, built under the direction of the first Shabdrung Ngawang Namgyal.
