Thangthong Dewachen Dupthop Nunnery

Thangthong Dewachen Dupthop Nunnery, often referred to as Zilukha Nunnery, is a tranquil retreat perched on a hillside in Thimphu. Established by Drubthob Thangtong Gyalpo, a revered Tibetan Buddhist master known for his contributions to Buddhist teachings and iron bridge construction, the nunnery is a center of spiritual practice and meditation for its community of around 60 nuns. The nunnery offers visitors a peaceful escape, with its serene environment, the soft hum of prayer chants, and stunning panoramic views of the Thimphu Valley and Tashichho Dzong. This sacred site provides a unique opportunity to witness the spiritual life of Bhutanese nuns and to experience the deep-rooted Buddhist traditions of Bhutan in a serene and contemplative setting.

Originally constructed in 1641 by Zhabdrung Ngawang Namgyal, the dzong has undergone several renovations, the most significant one being in the 1960s under the reign of the third king, Jigme Dorji Wangchuck. The architecture of Tashichho Dzong is a classic example of Bhutanese design, featuring massive whitewashed walls, intricate woodwork, and a golden spire.

The dzong is surrounded by well-kept gardens and courtyards, offering a serene atmosphere. It’s particularly vibrant during the annual Thimphu Tshechu, a religious festival featuring masked dances and cultural performances, drawing both locals and tourists.
