EXCELLENT Based on 150 reviews Posted on Tripadvisor Jorg H12 July 2026Verified perfect days in Bhutan We were so lucky to have Sonam as our guide for our 8 day tour of Bhutan. Everything along the way was perfect and we had no difficulties at all. Sonam was friendly, funny and entertaining, but what really blew us away was her knowledge of the history of Bhutan and Buddhism and her ability to tell the stories and legends of the various characters in Buddhism that we encountered. He knowledge really helped to enhance our enjoyment of Bhutan as well as our other travels into Tibet and China. I also want to mention our driver Nawang. He was a very calm and careful driver and we appreciated his driving over some challenging roads. We never felt scared or nervous and he never lost his cool, or became frustrated with other drivers. Overall, our guide and driver team made our trip to Bhutan easy, educational, fun, interesting, safe and fantastic!! The tour itself was well thought out, customized according to our interests, competitively priced and communication with Ngawang (not sure about spelling) the owner was very timely and clear.Posted on Tripadvisor Rita D3 July 2026Verified Excellent Price to Value Tour Fabulous Tour! We appreciated that OMSHA was responsive from inquiry to final booking. Price to value was excellent. We liked the selected itinerary and appreciated that we could make changes as needed. Our guides Sonam and Tashi were knowledgeable and professional and we had great conversations. It felt more like traveling with friends than with a tour. I would highly recommend OMSHA. You won't be disappointed!Posted on Tripadvisor Michael S16 June 2026Verified Hassle free and flexible Communication was quick and clear from the start. Personable. Level of service provided by OMSHA travel was unmatched in many areas. From the pick up at the airport, Sonam and Ganesh kept our exploration of Bhutan flawless. Our requests to visit specific areas and activities were accommodated. We spent a night in a homestay in Gasa, visited hot springs, had a lovely riverside birthday picnic and attended Folklore Show that was a highlight of our trip. Nawang handled all communications and financial details thoroughly and transparently.Posted on Tripadvisor Wander340623001438 June 2026Verified Amazing Bhutan We traveled to Bhutan in June 2026, and Omsha Travels made our holiday a truly wonderful experience. She was flexible and adjusted our itinerary to avoid crowds, which made the experience more enjoyable. Sonam knows the sites well and shared many interesting stories. It was great to learn about Bhutanese culture both visually and through conversation. The driver was also a very friendly and cheerful person, which added to the pleasant journey 😊.

Bhutan is often called the Last Shangri-La, a kingdom where culture, nature, and spirituality remain deeply preserved. While hotels and luxury resorts offer comfort, nothing compares to the warmth and authenticity of staying in a traditional Bhutanese homestay.
For travelers seeking a deeper connection with local life, homestays offer a rare opportunity to experience Bhutan not as a tourist—but as a welcomed guest in a Bhutanese home.
What is a Bhutanese Homestay?
A Bhutanese homestay is a family-run accommodation where guests stay in a traditional house, usually built in Bhutan’s unique architectural style using wood, stone, and mud.
You don’t just stay there—you live with the family, eat with them, and experience their daily lifestyle. It is one of the most meaningful ways to understand Bhutan’s culture, values, and simplicity.
Why Choose a Homestay in Bhutan?
1. Authentic Cultural Experience
Homestays allow you to experience Bhutanese traditions firsthand—whether it’s butter tea in the morning, prayer rituals at home, or helping in the kitchen.
2. Warm Bhutanese Hospitality
Bhutanese people are known for their kindness. Guests are treated like family, not customers. You will often be invited to join meals, conversations, and even local celebrations.
3. Traditional Food Experience
One of the highlights of a homestay is homemade Bhutanese food. Expect dishes like:
- Ema Datshi (chili and cheese)
- Red rice
- Suja (butter tea)
- Seasonal vegetables from the farm
Meals are fresh, organic, and cooked with care.
4. Insight into Rural Life
From farming activities to traditional crafts, homestays give you a real look into Bhutan’s rural lifestyle.
5. Peaceful and Scenic Environment
Most homestays are located in villages surrounded by mountains, rice fields, and forests—offering peace far away from busy city life.
What to Expect in a Bhutan Homestay
Staying in a Bhutanese homestay is a simple and authentic experience. Rooms are clean and comfortable but not luxurious. Most homes are traditional wooden houses with basic amenities.
One important thing to note is that bathroom facilities are usually shared and located outside the room, especially in rural villages. They are generally clean but simple, reflecting the local lifestyle rather than modern hotel standards.
Electricity and hot water are available in most homestays, though sometimes limited depending on the region.
This simplicity is part of the experience—it allows travelers to disconnect from modern comfort and connect more deeply with nature and local culture.
Best Places for Homestay Experiences in Bhutan
Punakha Valley
Known for its warm climate and rice fields, Punakha provides peaceful riverside village stays.
Bumthang Valley
Often called the spiritual heart of Bhutan, Bumthang offers deeply traditional cultural homestays.
Haa Valley
A hidden gem with untouched villages and a very authentic rural experience.
Eastern Bhutan (Trashigang, Mongar, and Surrounding Areas)
Eastern Bhutan offers some of the most untouched and authentic homestay experiences in the country. Regions like Trashigang, Mongar, and nearby villages are less visited by tourists, making them perfect for travelers seeking raw cultural immersion.
Homestay Etiquette in Bhutan
To respect local customs, keep these tips in mind:
- Dress modestly in villages
- Remove shoes before entering the house
- Ask before taking photos inside homes
- Respect prayer rooms and religious items
- Be open to simple living conditions
Best Time to Experience Homestays in Bhutan
- Spring (March–May): Flowers and pleasant weather
- Summer (June–August): Farming season with paddy cultivation experiences
- Autumn (September–November): Clear skies and festivals
- Winter (December–February): Quiet villages and mountain views
Final Thoughts
A stay in a traditional Bhutanese homestay is not about luxury—it is about authenticity, connection, and simplicity. It allows travelers to experience Bhutanese happiness in its purest form.
At OMSHA Travel, we carefully arrange homestay experiences that balance comfort with cultural authenticity, giving travelers a meaningful insight into Bhutanese life.
