Jambay Lhakhang Drub

Jambay Lhakhang Drub – A Mystical Festival in Bumthang

The Jambay Lhakhang Drub is one of Bhutan’s most sacred and enchanting festivals, held annually at the ancient Jambay Lhakhang temple in Bumthang, the spiritual heartland of the kingdom. This vibrant tshechu typically takes place in October or November, and is deeply rooted in local legend, spiritual devotion, and community celebration.

What sets the Jambay Lhakhang Drub apart is its blend of sacred rituals and mystical performances. The festival honors the deeds of Guru Rinpoche (Padmasambhava) and celebrates the establishment of Jambay Lhakhang—one of the 108 temples believed to have been built in a single night by Tibetan King Songtsen Gampo in the 7th century to subdue a demoness.

Key highlights of the festival include:

  • Tercham (The Naked Dance): A rare and sacred midnight ritual performed by selected men wearing only masks. It is believed to drive away evil spirits and bless infertile women with fertility.

  • Mewang (Fire Blessing): Locals and visitors jump through a large fire to purify themselves and gain protection from misfortunes.

  • Mask Dances (Cham): Monks and laymen perform traditional dances in elaborate costumes and masks, reenacting spiritual stories and legends.
