Changangkha Lhakhang

Changangkha Lhakhang – An Ancient Hilltop Temple in Thimphu

Changangkha Lhakhang is one of the oldest and most revered temples in Thimphu, perched on a ridge overlooking the Thimphu Valley. Founded in the 12th century by Lama Phajo Drugom Zhigpo, the temple holds deep spiritual importance for the local community and is especially known as a place where parents bring newborns to receive blessings and names from the temple lama.

Dedicated to Avalokiteshvara (Chenrezig), the Bodhisattva of Compassion, Changangkha Lhakhang features a striking central statue and beautifully preserved wall paintings depicting Buddhist deities, protectors, and scenes from sacred texts. The temple’s prayer wheels, fluttering prayer flags, and traditional Bhutanese architecture create a deeply spiritual and photogenic setting.

From the temple courtyard, visitors are rewarded with panoramic views of Thimphu city, making Changangkha Lhakhang a favorite spot for both spiritual seekers and photographers. Despite its proximity to the city center, the temple retains a calm and devotional atmosphere, offering a glimpse into everyday Bhutanese religious life.
