EXCELLENT Based on 150 reviews Posted on Tripadvisor Jorg H12 July 2026Verified perfect days in Bhutan We were so lucky to have Sonam as our guide for our 8 day tour of Bhutan. Everything along the way was perfect and we had no difficulties at all. Sonam was friendly, funny and entertaining, but what really blew us away was her knowledge of the history of Bhutan and Buddhism and her ability to tell the stories and legends of the various characters in Buddhism that we encountered. He knowledge really helped to enhance our enjoyment of Bhutan as well as our other travels into Tibet and China. I also want to mention our driver Nawang. He was a very calm and careful driver and we appreciated his driving over some challenging roads. We never felt scared or nervous and he never lost his cool, or became frustrated with other drivers. Overall, our guide and driver team made our trip to Bhutan easy, educational, fun, interesting, safe and fantastic!! The tour itself was well thought out, customized according to our interests, competitively priced and communication with Ngawang (not sure about spelling) the owner was very timely and clear.Posted on Tripadvisor Rita D3 July 2026Verified Excellent Price to Value Tour Fabulous Tour! Nimalung Festival
The Nimalung Festival is one of the most spiritually significant festivals in Bumthang, the spiritual heartland of Bhutan. Held at the sacred Nimalung Dratshang in the beautiful Chokhor Valley, the festival is famous for its sacred mask dances, religious ceremonies, and the display of a magnificent Thongdrel of Guru Rinpoche.
The festival provides visitors with a rare opportunity to witness Bhutan’s ancient Buddhist traditions in an authentic and peaceful setting. Surrounded by mountains, traditional villages, and sacred monasteries, Nimalung Festival offers a deeply meaningful cultural experience away from the larger crowds of Bhutan’s more famous festivals.
Where is Nimalung Festival Held?
The festival is held at Nimalung Dratshang, located in Chokhor Valley, Bumthang District, central Bhutan.
Nimalung Dratshang is approximately 20 km from Jakar town and is surrounded by beautiful farmland, pine forests, and traditional Bhutanese villages. The monastery is one of the important religious institutions of the Drukpa Kagyu tradition of Bhutan.
History and Significance of Nimalung Festival
The Nimalung Festival is dedicated to Guru Rinpoche (Padmasambhava), the great Buddhist master who introduced Vajrayana Buddhism to Bhutan in the 8th century.
Nimalung Dratshang was founded in the 20th century by Dorji Lingpa, a revered Buddhist master and treasure revealer. The monastery houses many important sacred relics and religious treasures, including a precious statue of Guru Rinpoche and a sacred Thongdrel.
The festival is held to honor Guru Rinpoche and to provide blessings for devotees. Bhutanese people believe that attending the festival and witnessing the sacred dances can help purify negative karma and bring peace, prosperity, and spiritual well-being.
Festival Highlights
Sacred Mask Dances (Cham)
The main attraction of Nimalung Festival is the performance of sacred cham (mask dances) by monks.
Dancers wear colorful masks and elaborate silk costumes representing:
- Buddhist deities
- Guru Rinpoche’s manifestations
- Guardian spirits
- Enlightened beings
- Mythological figures
Accompanied by traditional instruments such as drums, horns, and cymbals, these dances narrate Buddhist teachings and symbolize the victory of wisdom over ignorance.
The performances are believed to cleanse negative forces and bless the community.
Guru Rinpoche Thongdrel Unveiling (Final Day)
The most sacred moment of the Nimalung Festival is the unveiling of the giant Thongdrel of Guru Rinpoche on the final day.
The Thongdrel is a massive silk appliqué painting depicting Guru Rinpoche (Padmasambhava). It is displayed early in the morning, allowing devotees and visitors to receive blessings by simply viewing the sacred image.
According to Bhutanese Buddhist belief, seeing the Thongdrel with sincere devotion helps:
- Purify negative karma
- Accumulate merit
- Receive spiritual blessings
- Bring protection and good fortune
The Thongdrel is displayed only for a few hours before being carefully rolled up and preserved until the following year. Witnessing this sacred unveiling is considered one of the most memorable experiences of attending Nimalung Festival.
Religious Ceremonies and Prayers
During the festival, monks perform special prayers and rituals inside Nimalung Dratshang.
Local devotees visit the monastery to:
- Receive blessings
- Make offerings
- Pray for health and prosperity
- Seek protection from obstacles
The peaceful and spiritual atmosphere of the festival allows visitors to experience Bhutan’s deep Buddhist traditions.
Traditional Bhutanese Culture
Nimalung Festival is also an important social gathering for local communities. People from nearby villages attend the festival dressed in their finest traditional attire.
Visitors can experience:
- Traditional Bhutanese Gho and Kira
- Local customs
- Community gatherings
- Bhutanese hospitality
- Traditional food
The intimate setting of Nimalung allows travelers to connect more closely with local people and experience authentic Bhutanese culture.
Festival Date
The Nimalung Festival is held annually in June or July, according to the Bhutanese lunar calendar.
The festival usually lasts for three days, with the final day featuring the sacred Guru Rinpoche Thongdrel unveiling ceremony.
For example, the Nimalung Festival 2026 is scheduled from 26th – 28th June 2026.
Festival dates vary each year, so travelers should confirm the official schedule before planning their Bhutan journey.
