EXCELLENT Based on 150 reviews Posted on Tripadvisor Jorg H12 July 2026Verified perfect days in Bhutan We were so lucky to have Sonam as our guide for our 8 day tour of Bhutan. Everything along the way was perfect and we had no difficulties at all. Sonam was friendly, funny and entertaining, but what really blew us away was her knowledge of the history of Bhutan and Buddhism and her ability to tell the stories and legends of the various characters in Buddhism that we encountered. He knowledge really helped to enhance our enjoyment of Bhutan as well as our other travels into Tibet and China. I also want to mention our driver Nawang. He was a very calm and careful driver and we appreciated his driving over some challenging roads. We never felt scared or nervous and he never lost his cool, or became frustrated with other drivers. Overall, our guide and driver team made our trip to Bhutan easy, educational, fun, interesting, safe and fantastic!! The tour itself was well thought out, customized according to our interests, competitively priced and communication with Ngawang (not sure about spelling) the owner was very timely and clear.Posted on Tripadvisor Rita D3 July 2026Verified Excellent Price to Value Tour Fabulous Tour! If you are planning a trip to Bhutan, one of the most memorable parts of your journey may begin before you even leave the airport.
The approach to Paro International Airport is famous around the world for its spectacular mountain scenery and technical challenges. Surrounded by the Himalayan mountains, Paro Airport is one of the few airports where commercial pilots must navigate a demanding approach through a narrow mountain valley before touching down.
For travelers flying to Bhutan for the first time, the experience can feel very different from arriving at a typical international airport.
So, what makes landing at Paro Airport so challenging?
Let’s take a closer look.
Where Is Paro Airport?
Paro International Airport is located in the Paro Valley of western Bhutan, approximately 6 kilometers from Paro town.
The airport sits at an elevation of about 2,235 meters (7,332 feet) above sea level and is surrounded by mountains.
Unlike airports where aircraft can approach in a relatively straight line over a large flat area, pilots approaching Paro have to carefully navigate the surrounding terrain.
Why Is Landing at Paro Airport So Difficult?
Several factors make the approach to Paro particularly demanding.
1. The Airport Is Surrounded by Mountains
The biggest challenge is the terrain.
The Paro Valley is enclosed by Himalayan mountains, meaning pilots cannot simply fly directly toward the runway from a long distance away.
Instead, the aircraft follows a carefully planned approach through the valley.
The surrounding mountains limit the pilot’s visibility of the runway until relatively late in the approach.
2. The Runway Is Relatively Short
Paro’s runway is approximately 2,265 meters long.
For modern commercial aircraft, this is perfectly manageable when operated under appropriate conditions, but it leaves less room for error than some of the world’s larger international airports.
Pilots must make a precise touchdown and manage the aircraft’s speed carefully.
3. The Approach Is Not a Straight Line
One of the most fascinating aspects of arriving at Paro is that the aircraft does not simply line up with the runway from miles away.
During the final approach, pilots must maneuver through the valley and make turns to align the aircraft with the runway.
This is one reason why the landing looks so dramatic from the passenger window.
You may see mountains extremely close to the aircraft before suddenly seeing the runway ahead.
4. Weather Can Change Quickly
Weather is another important consideration.
Mountain weather can change rapidly, and clouds, rain, wind and reduced visibility can affect flight operations.
Because of these conditions, flights to Paro are generally scheduled during daylight hours and are dependent on suitable weather and visibility.
This is one reason why occasional delays or schedule changes can happen when traveling to Bhutan.
Do All Pilots Fly Into Paro?
No.
One of the most interesting facts about Paro Airport is that only specially trained and authorized pilots are permitted to operate commercial flights there.
Pilots require specific training and experience for the airport and its challenging approach procedures.
So, when you board a flight to Bhutan, you can be reassured that the flight crew is specifically qualified to operate on the Paro route.
What Does the Landing Feel Like for Passengers?
For passengers, the experience can be exciting rather than frightening.
As the aircraft approaches Bhutan, you may begin seeing mountains through the windows.
The aircraft follows the valley before making the final turns toward the airport.
Then, quite suddenly, the runway comes into view.
For many travelers, the first sight of Paro Airport surrounded by mountains is one of the highlights of their Bhutan journey.
Which Side of the Plane Should You Sit On?
There is no universally guaranteed “best side” because the exact views can vary depending on the flight direction, weather and approach conditions.
However, a window seat is highly recommended if you want to enjoy the scenery.
On a clear day, the Himalayan landscape around Paro can be spectacular.
Is Flying into Paro Airport Safe?
Yes.
Although the approach is technically demanding, flying to Paro is not inherently unsafe.
The airport has been operating international commercial flights for many years, and airlines serving Bhutan use qualified crews and established operating procedures.
The important distinction is:
Challenging does not mean unsafe.
The airport requires specialized operations precisely because of its mountainous environment.
Flight crews must meet specific requirements, and flights operate according to weather and operational conditions.
Which Airlines Fly to Bhutan?
Paro is Bhutan’s main international airport and is served by airlines connecting Bhutan with several regional destinations.
Depending on the season and current schedules, travelers may find flights connecting through cities such as Kathmandu, Delhi, Bangkok, Singapore, Kolkata and other regional gateways.
Flight schedules can change, especially during festival periods and different travel seasons.
If you are traveling from the United States, Canada, Europe or Australia, you will generally need to connect through a regional Asian gateway before continuing to Paro.
For this reason, planning your international flights together with your Bhutan itinerary is important.
What Happens If the Weather Is Bad?
Because Paro is located in a mountainous valley, flights are dependent on suitable weather and visibility.
If conditions are not appropriate, a flight may be delayed, rescheduled or otherwise adjusted for safety.
This can occasionally affect travelers’ itineraries.
If you have a fixed international connection after leaving Bhutan, it is therefore wise to avoid planning an extremely tight connection.
At OMSHA Travel, we recommend allowing some flexibility when arranging flights around your Bhutan itinerary.
Is the Paro Landing Really the World’s Most Challenging?
You will often see Paro described online as “the world’s most challenging airport landing” or one of the most difficult commercial airport approaches.
The reality is a little more nuanced.
Paro is certainly one of the world’s most technically demanding commercial airports because of its mountainous terrain, approach procedures, weather conditions and limited visual approach options.
However, there is no universally recognized official ranking that makes Paro objectively the world’s most difficult airport.
It is better described as one of the world’s most challenging commercial airport approaches.
That distinction is important when discussing Paro accurately.
Why Paro Airport Is Part of the Bhutan Experience
For most destinations, the airport is simply where your holiday begins.
In Bhutan, the journey itself can be part of the adventure.
As your aircraft descends toward the Paro Valley, you begin seeing forested mountains, traditional Bhutanese architecture and dramatic Himalayan landscapes.
Then the runway appears between the mountains.
Within minutes, you have arrived in one of the world’s most unique travel destinations.
The experience provides a fitting introduction to Bhutan—a country where dramatic landscapes, traditional culture and carefully preserved environments remain central to everyday life.
Tips for Your First Flight to Paro
If this is your first trip to Bhutan, keep these tips in mind:
Choose a Window Seat
A window seat gives you the best opportunity to enjoy the Himalayan scenery.
Don’t Panic About the Turns
The approach may look unusual compared with a conventional airport landing. The turns are part of the established approach procedure.
Keep Your Schedule Flexible
Mountain weather can affect flight operations, so avoid creating very tight connections.
Arrive During Daylight
International flights to Paro operate with daylight considerations because of the airport’s visual approach requirements.
Keep Your Camera Ready
The mountains around Paro can provide some extraordinary views shortly before landing.
