Gomphu Kora Festival: A Sacred Himalayan Celebration in Trashi Yangtse

According to legend, Guru Rinpoche meditated in the cave and subdued a powerful demon, sealing it within the rock to protect the local people. Because of this, the site is considered highly sacred, and performing a kora (circumambulation) here is believed to purify karma and bring blessings.

What Happens During the Festival

1. Night-Long Kora

One of the most unique aspects of the festival is the night-long circumambulation around the sacred temple. Devotees walk continuously in a clockwise direction, chanting prayers and spinning prayer wheels. The atmosphere is filled with devotion, chanting, and the sound of bells.

2. Mask Dances and Rituals

Monks perform sacred cham (mask dances), depicting stories of Buddhist teachings, protection of Dharma, and the triumph of good over evil. These performances are both spiritual and symbolic, designed to bless the land and its people.

3. Pilgrimage Gathering

Pilgrims from across Bhutan and Arunachal Pradesh gather in large numbers, many wearing traditional attire. The festival is a rare moment where cross-border cultural and spiritual ties are celebrated peacefully and respectfully.

Devotees make offerings of butter lamps, incense, and prayers at the temple. Many come with personal vows, seeking blessings for health, prosperity, and spiritual well-being.
