Nabji Lhakhang Drup Festival

Nabji Lhakhang Drup is a unique religious festival held at Nabji Lhakhang in Nabji, Trongsa, held around in December or January depending on lunar calender. Set in a peaceful rural village, the festival offers travelers an opportunity to experience Bhutanese traditions away from the country’s more frequently visited tourist destinations.

The festival is held in honor of Guru Padmasambhava, also known as Guru Rinpoche, and is celebrated with sacred mask dances, folk performances and religious ceremonies. One of its distinctive features is Mewang, a traditional fire blessing ceremony, along with Tercham, a sacred dance traditionally performed at night.

Nabji can now be reached by road, with the journey taking approximately 3–4 hours from Trongsa, depending on road conditions and stops along the way. Visitors generally stay in local homestays, making the experience especially suitable for travelers who want to connect with the local community and experience rural Bhutanese hospitality.

For those seeking an offbeat December festival in Bhutan, Nabji Lhakhang Drup offers a memorable combination of traditional culture, scenic mountain landscapes and authentic village life.
