EXCELLENT Based on 150 reviews Posted on Tripadvisor Jorg H12 July 2026Verified perfect days in Bhutan We were so lucky to have Sonam as our guide for our 8 day tour of Bhutan. Everything along the way was perfect and we had no difficulties at all. Sonam was friendly, funny and entertaining, but what really blew us away was her knowledge of the history of Bhutan and Buddhism and her ability to tell the stories and legends of the various characters in Buddhism that we encountered. He knowledge really helped to enhance our enjoyment of Bhutan as well as our other travels into Tibet and China. I also want to mention our driver Nawang. He was a very calm and careful driver and we appreciated his driving over some challenging roads. We never felt scared or nervous and he never lost his cool, or became frustrated with other drivers. Overall, our guide and driver team made our trip to Bhutan easy, educational, fun, interesting, safe and fantastic!! The tour itself was well thought out, customized according to our interests, competitively priced and communication with Ngawang (not sure about spelling) the owner was very timely and clear.Posted on Tripadvisor Rita D3 July 2026Verified Excellent Price to Value Tour Fabulous Tour! Our guides Sonam and Tashi were knowledgeable and professional and we had great conversations. It felt more like traveling with friends than with a tour. I would highly recommend OMSHA. You won't be disappointed!Posted on Tripadvisor Michael S16 June 2026Verified Hassle free and flexible Communication was quick and clear from the start. Personable. Level of service provided by OMSHA travel was unmatched in many areas. From the pick up at the airport, Sonam and Ganesh kept our exploration of Bhutan flawless. Our requests to visit specific areas and activities were accommodated. We spent a night in a homestay in Gasa, visited hot springs, had a lovely riverside birthday picnic and attended Folklore Show that was a highlight of our trip. Nawang handled all communications and financial details thoroughly and transparently.Posted on Tripadvisor Wander340623001438 June 2026Verified Amazing Bhutan We traveled to Bhutan in June 2026, and Omsha Travels made our holiday a truly wonderful experience. Rhododendron Week in Shetemey, Merak, Trashigang
Nestled in the pristine highlands of eastern Bhutan, Shetemey in Merak Gewog, Trashigang District, comes alive each year during the vibrant Rhododendron Week celebration. This unique event showcases the spectacular blooming season of Bhutan’s rhododendron forests while highlighting the rich cultural heritage of the Brokpa people, the semi-nomadic yak-herding community of eastern Bhutan.
For nature lovers, photographers, trekkers, and cultural enthusiasts, Rhododendron Week offers an unforgettable opportunity to experience one of Bhutan’s most beautiful and least-explored regions.
Where is Shetemey?
Shetemey is located in the remote high-altitude region of Merak, approximately 3,500 to 4,000 meters above sea level in Trashigang District. The area forms part of the Sakteng Wildlife Sanctuary, Bhutan’s only protected area dedicated to preserving both biodiversity and living cultural traditions.
The journey to Shetemey takes visitors through alpine meadows, pristine forests, and traditional Brokpa settlements, offering breathtaking views of the Eastern Himalayas.
What is Rhododendron Week?
Rhododendron Week is an annual eco-tourism and cultural event organized to celebrate the blooming of Bhutan’s diverse rhododendron species. Bhutan is home to more than 40 species of rhododendrons, many of which flourish in the cool mountain climate of Merak and Sakteng.
During the flowering season, the hillsides around Shetemey transform into a colorful landscape filled with shades of red, pink, white, purple, and yellow blossoms, creating a spectacular natural display.
The event promotes sustainable tourism, environmental conservation, and community-based tourism while providing economic opportunities for local residents.
Highlights of Rhododendron Week
1. Spectacular Rhododendron Blooms
The main attraction is undoubtedly the stunning rhododendron forests surrounding Shetemey. Visitors can enjoy guided nature walks through mountain trails lined with blooming flowers against the backdrop of snow-capped peaks.
The flowering season typically occurs from late April to early June, depending on weather conditions and altitude.
2. Experience Authentic Brokpa Culture
Merak is home to the Brokpa people, known for their unique customs, language, traditional attire, and yak-herding lifestyle. During Rhododendron Week, visitors can experience:
- Traditional Brokpa dances
- Folk songs and music
- Cultural performances
- Local handicrafts and textiles
- Traditional yak-hair products
- Indigenous cuisine
The distinctive black yak-hair hats worn by Brokpa women are among the most recognizable cultural symbols of eastern Bhutan.
3. Highland Trekking and Nature Walks
The event includes guided trekking routes through alpine forests and highland pastures. These trails provide opportunities to:
- Observe rare rhododendron species
- Spot Himalayan birdlife
- Explore pristine mountain ecosystems
- Enjoy panoramic views of the Eastern Himalayas
- Visit traditional Brokpa villages
4. Birdwatching and Wildlife Exploration
The surrounding Sakteng Wildlife Sanctuary is rich in biodiversity. Nature enthusiasts may encounter:
- Blood pheasants
- Himalayan monals
- Satyr tragopans
- Blue sheep
- Red foxes
- Various high-altitude bird species
The sanctuary is also famous in local folklore as the home of the mythical “Migoi” or Yeti.
5. Local Food and Culinary Experiences
Visitors can sample authentic Brokpa cuisine prepared using local ingredients. Popular dishes include:
- Yak meat specialties
- Yak cheese products
- Buckwheat dishes
- Traditional butter tea
- Locally grown mountain vegetables
These culinary experiences offer insight into the traditional highland lifestyle of eastern Bhutan.
How to Reach Shetemey
Most visitors begin their journey from Trashigang, eastern Bhutan’s largest district. From Trashigang town, travelers drive to Merak before continuing on foot or by local transport to Shetemey, depending on road conditions.
The journey itself is a memorable experience, passing through scenic mountain landscapes, traditional villages, and untouched wilderness areas.
Why Visit Rhododendron Week?
Unlike Bhutan’s more famous cultural festivals, Rhododendron Week offers a unique combination of nature, conservation, and living cultural heritage. It provides travelers with an opportunity to explore a lesser-known part of Bhutan while supporting local communities and sustainable tourism initiatives.
Whether you are a botanist, photographer, trekker, birdwatcher, or cultural explorer, Rhododendron Week in Shetemey, Merak, offers a rare chance to experience the natural beauty and cultural richness of eastern Bhutan.
