History of Kurjey Lhakhang
The name Kurjey combines two Dzongkha words:
- Kur – Body
- Jey – Imprint
According to Bhutanese tradition, Guru Rinpoche meditated in a cave at this site during the 8th century after subduing a local demon that was causing suffering in the region. During his meditation, his body left a sacred imprint on the rock inside the cave, which remains one of Bhutan’s most revered religious relics.
