In the late 15th century, Pema Lingpa claimed that Guru Rinpoche (Padmasambhava) had hidden sacred Buddhist treasures, known as terma, in the deep waters of the Tang Chhu River for future generations.

To prove the authenticity of his vision, Pema Lingpa lit a butter lamp and entered the deep pool carrying it in one hand. Moments later, he emerged holding a sacred treasure chest while the butter lamp continued to burn without being extinguished by the water.

This miraculous event gave the site its name, Mebar Tsho, meaning “Burning Lake.” Since then, it has become one of Bhutan’s holiest pilgrimage destinations.
