EXCELLENT Based on 150 reviews Posted on Tripadvisor Jorg H12 July 2026Verified perfect days in Bhutan We were so lucky to have Sonam as our guide for our 8 day tour of Bhutan. Everything along the way was perfect and we had no difficulties at all. Sonam was friendly, funny and entertaining, but what really blew us away was her knowledge of the history of Bhutan and Buddhism and her ability to tell the stories and legends of the various characters in Buddhism that we encountered. He knowledge really helped to enhance our enjoyment of Bhutan as well as our other travels into Tibet and China. I also want to mention our driver Nawang. He was a very calm and careful driver and we appreciated his driving over some challenging roads. We never felt scared or nervous and he never lost his cool, or became frustrated with other drivers. Overall, our guide and driver team made our trip to Bhutan easy, educational, fun, interesting, safe and fantastic!! The tour itself was well thought out, customized according to our interests, competitively priced and communication with Ngawang (not sure about spelling) the owner was very timely and clear.Posted on Tripadvisor Rita D3 July 2026Verified Excellent Price to Value Tour Fabulous Tour! Perched on a scenic hilltop overlooking the valleys of eastern Bhutan, Drametse Monastery is one of the most revered Buddhist institutions in the Kingdom. Located in Drametse Village in Mongar District, the monastery is renowned not only for its rich spiritual heritage but also as the birthplace of the famous Drametse Nga Cham, a sacred mask dance recognized by UNESCO as an Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.
For travelers exploring Eastern Bhutan, a visit to Drametse Monastery offers a fascinating insight into Bhutanese Buddhism, religious traditions, and the cultural legacy that has shaped the region for centuries.

Drametse Monastery is located in Drametse Gewog, approximately 30 kilometers from Mongar Town in Eastern Bhutan. The monastery sits atop a ridge at an altitude of around 2,200 meters, offering spectacular views of the surrounding mountains, forests, and agricultural landscapes.
The journey to Drametse takes visitors through winding mountain roads, picturesque villages, and lush forests, making the trip as rewarding as the destination itself.
History of Drametse Monastery
Drametse Monastery was founded in 1511 by Ani Choten Zangmo, a prominent granddaughter of the great Tibetan treasure revealer Pema Lingpa. The monastery quickly became an important center for the Nyingma tradition of Buddhism and played a significant role in spreading Buddhist teachings throughout eastern Bhutan.
Over the centuries, Drametse has developed into one of Bhutan’s largest and most influential monastic institutions, housing hundreds of monks dedicated to religious study and practice.
Today, the monastery remains a vital spiritual center for local communities and pilgrims from across Bhutan.
The Birthplace of Drametse Nga Cham
Drametse Monastery is internationally famous as the birthplace of the Drametse Nga Cham, or the Dance of the Drums of Drametse.
This sacred masked dance was introduced in the 16th century and is believed to represent celestial beings offering music and prayers to Guru Padmasambhava (Guru Rinpoche). The performance features dancers wearing colorful masks and elaborate costumes while performing synchronized movements to the rhythmic beating of traditional drums.
Due to its cultural significance, UNESCO inscribed Drametse Nga Cham on the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity in 2008.
Today, the dance is performed during major religious festivals throughout Bhutan and remains one of the country’s most iconic cultural traditions.
