Gomphu Kora of Trashi Yangtse: The Sacred Cave Temple of Eastern Bhutan
Located along the banks of the Dangme Chu river in eastern Bhutan, Gomphu Kora is one of the most sacred pilgrimage sites in the region. The Meaning of Gomphu Kora
The name “Gomphu Kora” comes from two words:
- Gomphu meaning “meditation cave”
- Kora meaning “circumambulation”
Together, it refers to the sacred practice of walking around the holy cave as an act of devotion and spiritual purification.
The temple is built around a large sacred rock cave where Guru Rinpoche is believed to have meditated and subdued a powerful demon.
The Legend of Gomphu Kora
According to Bhutanese mythology, Guru Rinpoche visited this region in the 8th century while spreading Buddhism across the Himalayas. During his journey, he meditated inside the cave at Gomphu Kora and trapped a demon within the rock to prevent it from harming local people.
The cave and surrounding site have since been considered extremely sacred, and pilgrims believe that visiting Gomphu Kora helps cleanse negative karma and bring spiritual merit.
The Sacred Temple Complex
Today, Gomphu Kora consists of a small temple built around the sacred cave, surrounded by prayer wheels, chortens, and traditional Bhutanese structures. The site overlooks the river, creating a peaceful and spiritually charged atmosphere.
Pilgrims perform kora—walking clockwise around the temple—while chanting prayers and spinning prayer wheels. The sound of flowing water, combined with chanting and bells, enhances the spiritual experience.
The Famous Gomphu Kora Festival
One of the most important cultural events in eastern Bhutan is the annual Gomphu Kora Festival.
The festival is unique because it brings together people from both Bhutan and Arunachal Pradesh. Thousands of pilgrims gather to celebrate through prayer, dance, rituals, and communal gatherings.
A special highlight of the festival is the night-long circumambulation around the sacred site, where devotees walk continuously around the temple as an act of devotion.
The festival is divided into different days for different groups, maintaining both tradition and harmony among participating communities.
