EXCELLENT Based on 150 reviews Posted on Tripadvisor Jorg H12 July 2026Verified perfect days in Bhutan We were so lucky to have Sonam as our guide for our 8 day tour of Bhutan. Everything along the way was perfect and we had no difficulties at all. Sonam was friendly, funny and entertaining, but what really blew us away was her knowledge of the history of Bhutan and Buddhism and her ability to tell the stories and legends of the various characters in Buddhism that we encountered. He knowledge really helped to enhance our enjoyment of Bhutan as well as our other travels into Tibet and China. I also want to mention our driver Nawang. He was a very calm and careful driver and we appreciated his driving over some challenging roads. We never felt scared or nervous and he never lost his cool, or became frustrated with other drivers. Overall, our guide and driver team made our trip to Bhutan easy, educational, fun, interesting, safe and fantastic!! The tour itself was well thought out, customized according to our interests, competitively priced and communication with Ngawang (not sure about spelling) the owner was very timely and clear.Posted on Tripadvisor Rita D3 July 2026Verified Excellent Price to Value Tour Fabulous Tour! Our guides Sonam and Tashi were knowledgeable and professional and we had great conversations. It felt more like traveling with friends than with a tour. I would highly recommend OMSHA. You won't be disappointed!Posted on Tripadvisor Michael S16 June 2026Verified Hassle free and flexible Communication was quick and clear from the start. Personable. Level of service provided by OMSHA travel was unmatched in many areas. From the pick up at the airport, Sonam and Ganesh kept our exploration of Bhutan flawless. Our requests to visit specific areas and activities were accommodated. We spent a night in a homestay in Gasa, visited hot springs, had a lovely riverside birthday picnic and attended Folklore Show that was a highlight of our trip. Nawang handled all communications and financial details thoroughly and transparently.Posted on Tripadvisor Wander340623001438 June 2026Verified Amazing Bhutan We traveled to Bhutan in June 2026, and Omsha Travels made our holiday a truly wonderful experience. National Memorial Chorten: Thimphu’s Living Prayer
In a quiet part of central Thimphu, an unbroken circle of elderly Bhutanese men and women walks slowly around a whitewashed stupa, spinning prayer wheels and murmuring mantras, day after day, year after year. The National Memorial Chorten is one of the few major monuments in Bhutan built for pure devotion rather than defense or governance — and it’s arguably the most consistently used religious site in the entire capital.
Built in Memory of a King
The chorten was completed in 1974, built as a memorial to Bhutan’s third king, Jigme Dorji Wangchuck, who reigned from 1952 to 1972 and is widely regarded as the father of modern Bhutan — credited with abolishing serfdom, introducing the country’s first modern administrative reforms, and beginning Bhutan’s cautious opening to the outside world. The chorten had originally been envisioned by the king himself as a monument to world peace, and after his sudden death, it was completed by his family and the Bhutanese people as a memorial to him, taking on the dual role it holds today.
Because of this, locals often refer to it simply as “the memorial,” and it functions less like a museum piece and more like an active shrine woven into the daily rhythm of the city.
Architecture and Symbolism
The chorten follows classical Tibetan-Bhutanese stupa design: a whitewashed dome topped by a gilded spire, with elaborate mandalas, wrathful deities, and tantric imagery covering the interior walls — considered some of the finest examples of this style of religious art in the country. Unusually, there are no physical remains enshrined inside; instead, the structure is filled with intricate statues and images representing the peaceful and wrathful aspects of Buddhist deities and teachings, making the building itself a three-dimensional representation of Buddhist philosophy rather than a tomb.
A Place of Daily Devotion
What sets the Memorial Chorten apart from Bhutan’s dzongs and temples is its constant, unstaged use. From early morning until evening, a steady stream of Thimphu residents — many of them elderly — circle the chorten clockwise, a practice called kora, spinning the large prayer wheels set into its base and often carrying smaller handheld ones. Maroon-robed monks pass through as well, but the crowd is overwhelmingly local, making this one of the best places in the city to witness ordinary Bhutanese religious life rather than a performance staged for visitors.
Planning Your Visit
- Getting there: Centrally located in Thimphu, an easy walk from most hotels or a short taxi ride from anywhere in the city.
- Best time to visit: Early morning, when the number of local devotees circling the chorten is at its highest and the atmosphere is most authentic.
- Dress code: Modest clothing is appropriate; visitors are welcome to join the kora walk clockwise around the structure alongside locals.
- Combine it with: Its central location makes it an easy pairing with Thimphu’s Clock Tower Square, Kaja Throm market, or the drive up to Buddha Dordenma.
Where Bhutan’s dzongs and temples often feel frozen at a moment in the country’s history, the National Memorial Chorten feels entirely present tense — a monument that Thimphu never stopped using.
