Kila Nunnery Hike

Kila Nunnery Hike – A Peaceful Escape Above Paro

The Kila Nunnery Hike is a short yet soul-stirring journey that takes you through pine-scented forests, high cliffs, and spiritual serenity — all set against the dramatic backdrop of the Paro Valley. Nestled at an altitude of around 3,500 meters, Kila Gompa is one of Bhutan’s oldest nunneries and a peaceful retreat for Buddhist nuns dedicated to meditation and study.

Ideal for travelers seeking light adventure with cultural depth, this hike combines natural beauty with spiritual tranquility.

Kila Gompa, sometimes referred to as the “Sky Nunnery”, is home to around 60 nuns who live a quiet life of contemplation. The complex is built dramatically into a cliffside, surrounded by fluttering prayer flags and overlooking the misty Paro Valley. It is believed to date back to the 9th century, making it one of the oldest spiritual centers for women in Bhutan.

The trail from Chele La Pass descends gently through rhododendron forests, meadows, and hidden meditation caves, offering a peaceful and meditative walking experience. On clear days, you’ll be rewarded with distant views of Mt. Jomolhari and surrounding peaks.

The trail is accessible year-round, but the best time to hike is from March to May and September to November when the skies are clear and the forest is vibrant.
