Lungchutse Hike

Lungchutse Hike – A Scenic Ridge Walk from Dochula Pass

The Lungchutse Hike is one of Bhutan’s most rewarding day hikes, combining rich forest landscapes, sweeping mountain views, and a visit to a serene meditation temple. Starting near the famous Dochula Pass (3,100m), the trail winds through high-altitude forests to the peaceful Lungchutse Goemba, perched at 3,600 meters on a ridge with panoramic views of the eastern Himalayas.

Whether you’re an avid trekker or a casual hiker, this trail is a perfect way to experience Bhutan’s natural and spiritual beauty in a single day.

Trail Options

1. Classic Route – Dochula to Lungchutse

Starting from the 108 Druk Wangyal Chortens at Dochula Pass, the trail ascends gently through forests of fir, birch, and rhododendron. In spring, the forest comes alive with blooming rhododendrons and birdsong.

After about 1.5 to 2 hours of hiking, you’ll reach the Lungchutse Lhakhang, a small temple used by monks for silent retreats. On clear days, the viewpoint here offers 360-degree views of Bhutan’s Himalayan peaks, including Jomolhari, Masang Gang, and Gangkar Puensum.

2. Optional Route – Start from Trashigang Gompa

For a quieter and equally scenic alternative, you can begin the hike from Trashigang Gompa, a lesser-visited monastery located above the village of Hongtsho. This trail connects to Lungchutse along a peaceful forest ridge, offering a slightly longer but gentler ascent.

After visiting Lungchutse, you may return to Dochula Pass or hike back to Trashigang Goemba, creating a loop option ideal for those wanting a full-circle experience.
