EXCELLENT Based on 150 reviews Posted on Tripadvisor Jorg H12 July 2026Verified perfect days in Bhutan We were so lucky to have Sonam as our guide for our 8 day tour of Bhutan. Everything along the way was perfect and we had no difficulties at all. Sonam was friendly, funny and entertaining, but what really blew us away was her knowledge of the history of Bhutan and Buddhism and her ability to tell the stories and legends of the various characters in Buddhism that we encountered. He knowledge really helped to enhance our enjoyment of Bhutan as well as our other travels into Tibet and China. I also want to mention our driver Nawang. He was a very calm and careful driver and we appreciated his driving over some challenging roads. We never felt scared or nervous and he never lost his cool, or became frustrated with other drivers. Overall, our guide and driver team made our trip to Bhutan easy, educational, fun, interesting, safe and fantastic!! The tour itself was well thought out, customized according to our interests, competitively priced and communication with Ngawang (not sure about spelling) the owner was very timely and clear.Posted on Tripadvisor Rita D3 July 2026Verified Excellent Price to Value Tour Fabulous Tour! Our guides Sonam and Tashi were knowledgeable and professional and we had great conversations. It felt more like traveling with friends than with a tour. I would highly recommend OMSHA. You won't be disappointed!Posted on Tripadvisor Michael S16 June 2026Verified Hassle free and flexible Communication was quick and clear from the start. Personable. Level of service provided by OMSHA travel was unmatched in many areas. From the pick up at the airport, Sonam and Ganesh kept our exploration of Bhutan flawless. Our requests to visit specific areas and activities were accommodated. We spent a night in a homestay in Gasa, visited hot springs, had a lovely riverside birthday picnic and attended Folklore Show that was a highlight of our trip. Nawang handled all communications and financial details thoroughly and transparently.Posted on Tripadvisor Wander340623001438 June 2026Verified Amazing Bhutan We traveled to Bhutan in June 2026, and Omsha Travels made our holiday a truly wonderful experience. Dochula Pass: 108 Chortens Above the Clouds
Between Thimphu and Punakha, the road climbs through pine and rhododendron forest until it breaks out onto a ridge at 3,100 meters — and suddenly, everything opens up. On a clear day, the entire eastern Himalayan range unfolds in front of you, snow peaks stacked to the horizon. On any day, clear or not, you’re standing among 108 stone chortens, prayer flags snapping in the wind. This is Dochula Pass, one of the most photographed stops in Bhutan and, for most travelers, the first true “wow” of the journey out of Thimphu.
Why 108 Chortens
The chortens — known as the Druk Wangyal Chortens — were built in 2003-2004 on the orders of the Queen Mother, Ashi Dorji Wangmo Wangchuck, to honor Bhutanese soldiers who fought in a military operation against insurgents along the southern border in December 2003, led by the Fourth King, Jigme Singye Wangchuck. The number 108 is significant in Buddhist tradition — it mirrors the 108 beads on a mala (prayer rosary) — and the chortens were built as a monument to peace, arranged in three tiers around a central, larger stupa.
Rather than a memorial to war, the site was intended as a tribute to peace and to the sacrifice made in defending it, which is part of why the pass carries such a serene, contemplative atmosphere rather than a somber one.
The Views
On clear mornings — most reliable in autumn and winter — Dochula Pass offers uninterrupted views of the Himalayan range, including peaks along the Bhutan-Tibet border. Even without the mountains cooperating, the immediate scenery is striking: chortens draped in prayer flags, rhododendron forest (spectacular in bloom from March to April), and mist curling through the valley below.
Just next to the chortens sits the Druk Wangyal Lhakhang, a temple built in the same period, along with a small café where visitors typically stop for tea or coffee while taking in the view.
The Druk Wangyal Festival
Each December 13th, the pass hosts the Druk Wangyal Tshechu, a festival established to commemorate the same 2003 operation. Unlike most tshechus held at dzongs, this one takes place in the open air at Dochula, with masked dances performed by soldiers from the Royal Bhutan Army rather than monks — a distinctive twist on the traditional festival format.
Planning Your Visit
- Getting there: Dochula Pass sits directly on the Thimphu–Punakha highway, roughly 30–40 minutes from Thimphu. Nearly every itinerary between the two cities stops here.
- Best time to visit: Early morning offers the best odds of clear mountain views before clouds build up later in the day. October to December tends to have the clearest skies overall.
- What to bring: It’s noticeably colder and windier than the valleys below — a jacket is worth carrying even in warmer months.
- Combine it with: It’s a natural rest stop en route to Punakha Dzong, and close enough to Thimphu for a half-day round trip if time is tight.
Dochula isn’t a destination so much as a pause — the kind of place where a itinerary built around temples and fortresses gives way, for a few minutes, to nothing but wind, prayer flags, and mountains.
Dochula Pass: Scenic Views & Mervelous architecture
Dochula Pass, situated at an elevation of around 3,100 meters (10,200 feet), is a popular scenic spot in Bhutan. The pass offers stunning panoramic views of the Himalayan range on clear days, including peaks like Gangkar Puensum, the highest mountain in Bhutan.
At Dochula Pass, you’ll find the Druk Wangyal Chortens—a set of 108 stupas (chortens) built in honor of the Fourth King of Bhutan, Jigme Singye Wangchuck. These stupas are intricately decorated and are a prominent feature of the pass. The pass can be quite cold and windy, especially during the winter months, but the weather is often clear and bright, providing spectacular views.
Located on the road between Thimphu and Punakha, Dochula Pass is a convenient stop for travelers moving between these two major destinations.
The 108 chortens at Dochula Pass, known as the Druk Wangyal Chortens, were built in honor of Bhutanese soldiers who lost their lives in a military operation. Commissioned by Queen Mother Ashi Dorji Wangmo Wangchuck, these monuments symbolize peace and serve as a tribute to the country’s spiritual heritage.
