EXCELLENT Based on 138 reviews Posted on Lucy H8 May 2026Verified OMSHA was the best!!! We had the most fabulous time with our guide Sonam and driver Tashi! We were busy with several experiences every day, and had nice comfortable lodging every night. I loved our opportunities to see how paper is made, rice is roasted, mandelas are drawn with such minute perfect brush strokes, and overall how Bhutanese people live. This trip was full of learning. I especially loved how Gross National Happiness informs all things in Bhutan. I highly recommend OMSHA for travel in Bhutan! Posted on Barbara A3 May 2026Verified Best Bhutan Trip Omsha Travel is a terrific operator in Bhutan. Tucked away in the serene landscapes of eastern Bhutan, the Gomphu Kora Festival is one of the most spiritually significant and culturally vibrant celebrations in the region. Held annually at Gomphu Kora in Trashigang District, this festival brings together devotees from across eastern Bhutan and neighboring Arunachal Pradesh in India.
If you are looking to experience authentic Bhutanese culture away from the usual tourist circuit, Gomphu Kora offers a deeply spiritual and intimate festival experience.
Where is Gomphu Kora?
Gomphu Kora is located about 24 kilometers from Trashigang town, near the banks of the Kholong Chu River. The temple is modest in size compared to Bhutan’s grand dzongs, but its spiritual importance is immense.
The festival is usually held in March or April, following the Bhutanese lunar calendar.
The Legend Behind Gomphu Kora
The origins of Gomphu Kora are rooted in the life of Guru Rinpoche (Padmasambhava), the great tantric master who introduced Buddhism to Bhutan in the 8th century.
According to legend, a powerful demon once terrorized the region. Guru Rinpoche came to subdue this evil force and meditated inside a cave at Gomphu Kora. Through his spiritual power, he defeated and bound the demon beneath a large rock.
Today, that sacred rock is enshrined within the temple, and devotees circumambulate it as an act of purification and devotion. The name “Gomphu Kora” literally means “Meditation Cave Circumambulation.”
Festival Celebrations and Rituals
Unlike large tshechus held in western Bhutan, the Gomphu Kora Festival has a more intimate and traditional atmosphere. The highlight of the festival is the night-long circumambulation (kora) of the temple and sacred rock.
Night-long Kora – Night-time Circumambulation
Devotees gather in their finest traditional attire—gho for men and kira for women—to perform kora around the temple. Many believe that completing the circumambulation during the festival washes away sins and brings blessings for the coming year.
The atmosphere is magical:
- Butter lamps flicker in the dark
- Prayer flags flutter in the night breeze
- Devotional songs echo through the valley
Many families camp near the temple grounds, turning the festival into a social and spiritual gathering.
Cultural Significance of Gomphu Kora Festival
The festival holds immense religious and cultural importance, especially for the people of eastern Bhutan.
1. Spiritual Cleansing and Blessings
Devotees believe that attending the festival and performing kora purifies negative karma and protects them from misfortune.
2. Honoring Guru Rinpoche
The festival commemorates the triumph of Guru Rinpoche over evil forces, symbolizing the victory of wisdom over ignorance.
3. Community Bonding
Gomphu Kora serves as a social event where families reunite, friendships are renewed, and marriages are arranged. It strengthens community ties in rural eastern Bhutan.
4. Cross-Border Cultural Connection
The festival also attracts devotees from Arunachal Pradesh in India, reflecting the shared Himalayan Buddhist heritage across borders.
Why Visit the Gomphu Kora Festival?
If you have already explored western Bhutan’s famous festivals, visiting Gomphu Kora offers a completely different perspective.
- Fewer tourists, more authentic experience
- Strong local participation
- Unique night-time rituals
- Deep spiritual atmosphere
- Beautiful rural landscapes of eastern Bhutan
It is a perfect addition to an eastern Bhutan journey that includes Trashigang, Trashi Yangtse, and nearby sacred sites.
Travel Tips for Visitors
- Plan your trip according to the lunar calendar dates.
- Dress modestly and respectfully.
- Participate in the kora if you wish—it is open to all.
- Carry warm clothing, as nights can be chilly.
- Photography is generally allowed outside, but always ask before taking photos inside the temple.
Final Thoughts
The Gomphu Kora Festival is more than just a religious event—it is a living expression of faith, history, and community in eastern Bhutan. Rooted in the legacy of Guru Rinpoche, it continues to inspire devotion and unity among the people.
For travelers seeking a meaningful and off-the-beaten-path festival experience, Gomphu Kora is truly a hidden spiritual gem of Bhutan.
