Can You Go Cashless in Bhutan? How to Pay with Cards, UPI & Digital Wallets

Bhutan has quietly turned into one of the most digitally connected travel destinations in the Himalayas. Walk into a corner shop in Thimphu or a roadside momo stall in Paro, and you’ll see locals tapping their phones to pay instead of counting out ngultrum notes. Mobile payments have become part of everyday life here — from taxi fares to butter tea, everything gets settled with a quick QR scan. So the real question for visitors isn’t “does Bhutan have cashless payments” — it’s “can you, as a foreigner, actually use them?” The answer is yes, with a few caveats depending on where you’re from.

Bhutan’s cashless culture is real

Bhutan’s push toward a cashless economy has been driven largely by two homegrown mobile wallets — mBoB (run by the Bank of Bhutan) and MPay (from Bhutan National Bank). These apps let Bhutanese residents pay merchants, split bills, recharge phones, and transfer money entirely through QR codes. Nearly every shop, café, and taxi driver in urban areas now has a QR code taped to the counter or dashboard, and digital payments have become the default rather than the exception in towns like Thimphu, Paro, and Punakha.

Good news: foreigners can use goBoB and MyPay too

Unlike many countries where local mobile wallets are locked behind a domestic bank account, Bhutan has made a real effort to open these systems up to tourists.

MyPay was built partly with visitors in mind. You can download it from the Play Store or App Store, register using a Bhutanese SIM card (easily bought at the Paro airport arrival terminal from TashiCell or Bhutan Telecom counters), and top it up using an international credit or debit card. Once loaded, it works just like a local’s wallet — scan and pay at any MyPay-enabled merchant, split bills, or send money to other users.

goBoB has gone a step further recently. Tourists can now register before even landing in Bhutan, using just a passport and email-based OTP verification — no local SIM required. Funds can be loaded directly from an international Visa or Mastercard, which get converted into ngultrum for spending. This means you could theoretically set up your wallet from home and land in Paro ready to pay cashless from day one.

What about UPI?

If you’re travelling from India, you’re in an even better position. Bhutan has integrated UPI into its QR payment network, so apps like Google Pay, PhonePe, and BHIM can scan the same mBoB/goBoB QR codes used by locals. Transactions go through instantly, typically with no extra charges, making Bhutan one of the few countries outside India where Indian travellers can pay with the apps already on their phone.

For travellers from other countries, however, home-market apps like Apple Pay or a non-Indian Google Pay account generally won’t work directly with Bhutanese QR merchants — which is exactly why setting up MyPay or goBoB locally becomes the practical workaround.

What about UnionPay for travellers from China?

For travellers from China, UnionPay can also be used for payments at participating merchants in Bhutan through QR code scanning. If your UnionPay-enabled banking app or payment app supports Bhutanese QR payments, you may be able to scan the merchant’s QR code and pay directly from your account.

This gives Chinese travellers another convenient option alongside cash and other available payment methods.

Cards and ATMs

Alongside mobile wallets, Bhutan does accept international cards at hotels, larger restaurants, and shops in bigger towns:

  • Visa, JCB, UnionPay, and RuPay cards are widely accepted at Bhutan National Bank ATMs and POS terminals
  • Card payments often carry a surcharge of around 3–5%
  • ATMs exist in main towns but can occasionally run out of cash or be temporarily offline, so don’t rely on them as your only backup

Important: Before travelling to Bhutan, please inform your bank or card provider about your travel plans and make sure that international transactions from the Asia-Pacific region are enabled/approved for your card. This can help prevent your transactions from being declined while you are in Bhutan.

So, can you actually go cashless in Bhutan?

Largely, yes — especially in Thimphu, Paro, and other well-visited areas. Here’s the realistic picture:

  • Indian tourists: Can go almost fully cashless using UPI apps on Bhutan’s QR network.
  • Other international tourists: Can go cashless by setting up MyPay or goBoB, funded through an international card, either on arrival or in advance.
  • Everyone: Should still carry some cash for rural areas, small villages, and the odd cash-only vendor, since digital adoption thins out once you leave the main towns.

Bhutan’s digital payment push — sometimes bundled under its broader “Digital Drukyul” ambitions — has made the country far more tourist-friendly on the payments front than it was even a couple of years ago. If you’re planning a trip, downloading MyPay or goBoB before you go (or right at Paro airport) is genuinely worth the ten minutes it takes, especially if bargaining with crumpled ngultrum notes at every stop sounds like the opposite of a relaxing holiday.

A note on carrying cash: Even with all this digital convenience, it’s wise to keep some small ngultrum notes on hand. Unexpected situations — a network outage, a shop whose QR machine is down, or a remote shop with weak mobile network signal — can leave you needing physical cash. It’s also the norm (and often the only option) for offerings at temples and monasteries, and for tipping hotel staff, restaurant servers, and trekking guides and porters, where a cash tip is the expected and most appreciated gesture. A small stash of notes in different denominations will save you from awkward moments in these situations.
