EXCELLENT Based on 138 reviews Posted on Lucy H8 May 2026Verified OMSHA was the best!!! We had the most fabulous time with our guide Sonam and driver Tashi! We were busy with several experiences every day, and had nice comfortable lodging every night. I loved our opportunities to see how paper is made, rice is roasted, mandelas are drawn with such minute perfect brush strokes, and overall how Bhutanese people live. This trip was full of learning. I especially loved how Gross National Happiness informs all things in Bhutan. I highly recommend OMSHA for travel in Bhutan! Posted on Barbara A3 May 2026Verified Best Bhutan Trip Omsha Travel is a terrific operator in Bhutan. I was well cared for and the driving was excellent. Even on hairy muddy roads I had full confidence in the driver. My guide was always there to explain and teach and share. Also held my hand on tough Tigers Nest steps. Nestled in the Himalayas, Bhutan is often referred to as the “Happiest Country in the World.” Unlike many nations that measure success through economic output, Bhutan emphasizes the well-being of its people through the philosophy of Gross National Happiness (GNH). This unique approach to life, combined with a deep-rooted cultural heritage, makes Bhutan a remarkable example of a country where happiness is a national priority.
1. Gross National Happiness (GNH)
Introduced by the fourth King of Bhutan, Jigme Singye Wangchuck, GNH is a philosophy that values the holistic well-being of the Bhutanese people over material wealth. The four pillars of GNH—sustainable development, cultural preservation, environmental conservation, and good governance—guide every aspect of life in Bhutan. By visiting Bhutan, you’ll not only experience its serene landscapes but also gain insight into how Bhutanese people live balanced and fulfilling lives. Discover more about Bhutan’s unique approach to happiness on our Bhutan travel packages page.
2. Preservation of Culture and Traditions
Bhutan’s cultural heritage is one of the strongest in the world, with traditions passed down through generations. The Bhutanese people take pride in preserving their customs, from the traditional dress (Gho for men and Kira for women) to the rich festivals celebrated throughout the year. Bhutan is a land of vibrant traditions and festivals. From the colorful Tshechu festivals to the daily customs of wearing traditional attire like the Gho and Kira, Bhutanese culture is a source of pride and joy for its people. Visitors can immerse themselves in this rich heritage by attending festivals or visiting ancient monasteries like Taktshang Monastery (Tiger’s Nest). For a deeper dive into Bhutan’s cultural sites and experiences, explore our cultural tours for an unforgettable journey.
3. Connection with Nature
Bhutan’s natural beauty is one of its greatest assets. With over 70% of the country covered in forests and strict environmental conservation policies, Bhutan is a haven for nature lovers. The pristine air, lush valleys, and majestic mountains provide a peaceful backdrop that complements Bhutan’s commitment to Gross National Happiness. If you love trekking, Bhutan’s trails offer some of the most breathtaking views in the world. Explore our trekking adventures for a chance to connect with Bhutan’s stunning landscapes.
4. Spiritual Well-Being
As a predominantly Buddhist country, Bhutan places a strong emphasis on spiritual well-being. Monasteries, stupas, and temples dot the landscape, and the teachings of compassion and mindfulness permeate daily life. Whether you’re meditating at a remote monastery or chatting with a local monk, Bhutan’s spiritual richness will leave a lasting impression. If you’re interested in incorporating spirituality into your journey, consider booking a tour from our spiritual retreats for a meaningful experience.
5. Balanced Way of Life
Unlike fast-paced urban centers, Bhutanese society moves at a slower, more deliberate pace. People take time to appreciate the small joys in life, from spending time with family to participating in community events. The lack of extreme consumerism allows Bhutan to remain a place where values like kindness, generosity, and simplicity reign supreme. This balanced lifestyle contributes to a society that prioritizes mental well-being over material success.
6. Good Governance and Social Equity
Bhutan’s leadership also plays a crucial role in fostering happiness. The monarchy and government work together to ensure that policies benefit the whole population. Access to healthcare and education is free, and efforts are made to reduce poverty and promote social equity. The emphasis on good governance creates a sense of trust and security, further enhancing the happiness of Bhutan’s people.
7. Sustainable Travel: A Thoughtful Approach to Tourism
Bhutan’s focus on sustainable tourism means that every visitor plays a part in preserving its culture and environment. The government has implemented a mandatory Sustainable Development Fee (SDF) that contributes to the country’s conservation efforts and ensures that tourism supports Bhutan’s long-term well-being.
