She was flexible and adjusted our itinerary to avoid crowds, which made the experience more enjoyable. Sonam knows the sites well and shared many interesting stories. It was great to learn about Bhutanese culture both visually and through conversation. The driver was also a very friendly and cheerful person, which added to the pleasant journey 😊.Posted on Tripadvisor Priyank A28 May 2026Verified Incredible 7 days in Bhutan We did a 7 day/6 night special interest trekking trip of Bhutan and OMSHA was an exceptional experience. Even before we arrived, the agency made us feel confident that we were in good hands and did not need to worry about a thing. They communicated proactively to file the travel permit on our behalf, ask about our travel preferences and showed a ton of flexibility on the itinerary. Once we got there, our guide Lhazin Dorji and our driver Tashi Jamtsho picked us up without issue despite the flight being delayed, and the next week was an amazing adventure. Our guide, Lhazin Dorji, was extremely knowledgable about the history and religion of Bhutan and took the time to explain not just all the sites but any time we had any questions. He was also very kind and courteous, always making sure everything was sorted out, from hotel room check-ins to serving us meals and even carrying our water up the mountain for the Bumdra trek (to 4000m). He was very easy to talk to and taught us a lot about the spirit of Bhutan. He made sure we never felt rushed even though we saw a lot of fortresses, temples, cultural sites (where we did archery and saw a traditional dance), enjoyed local food, and visited places in and around Paro, Thimphu and Punakha. I'm grateful we had a such a knowledgable and passionate guide for our trip. Our driver Tashi was very capable and made sure we always felt safe even through winding mountain roads. He is a very smooth driver and also went above and beyond telling us about his experiences. He was also extremely kind and was a big part in making sure our trip was amazing. The day long hikes up to the Bumdrak campsite at 4000m and down to Tiger's nest monastery, as well as the Punakha Dzong fortress were the biggest highlights but the rest of the days were also filled with wonder: from seeing the national animal of Bhutan (Takin preserve), the massive Buddha Dordenma statue, the many stupas and temples we had to pleasure of visiting, and learning about the history and life in Bhutan from our guide was a once-in-a-lifetime experience. The hotels were really good as well, with great views, and the hospitality shown by our driver and guide were truly outstanding. A stress-free and extremely well executed trip. When I come back to Bhutan, I'll be going with OMSHA Travel again.Posted on Tripadvisor Dhruvi S22 May 2026Verified Mesmerizing and Happiness Thank you OMSHA travels for this memorable tour. Hoping to experience the unexplored part of Bhutan with them again.Posted on Tripadvisor Rajesh S22 May 2026Verified Silver jubilee with Team Omsha We "two" celebrated our Silver Jubilee with Team Omsha (#Sonam, #Nawang). They made our "7days & 6 nights" the most memorable experience. The offerings are very competitive, the value they create is priceless. The ambience they created was "personal".Posted on Tripadvisor useetheworld20 May 2026Verified OMSHA is Five Stars We just completed a two week tour with Omsha Travel and couldn’t be happier that this is the agency that we chose. From the very beginning stages of planning this trip with Nawang, to the last day, our trip was excellent. Our driver, Tashi, and guide, Sonom, were the absolute best. They were punctual, thorough in explaining the places we visited and the history of Bhutan plus tons of fun. After two weeks we felt like we were leaving family. I highly recommend Omsha. You won’t be disappointed.

Hey there! If you’re planning a trip to Bhutan, you just have to check out Punakha, known as the “winter capital.” It’s such a lovely spot that combines stunning natural scenery, rich culture, and loads of exciting outdoor fun. There’s so much to do and see here! In this travel blog, we’ll dive into some must-visit places like the magnificent Punakha Dzong, the thrilling Suspension Bridge, the peaceful Chimmi Lhakhang, the stunning Khamsum Yulley Namgyel hike, and of course, the awesome river rafting adventures! Plus, we’ll share some handy tips on when to visit and essential travel advice to make your trip even better.
1. Punakha Dzong: The "Palace of Happiness"
Your journey to Punakha wouldn’t be complete without checking out the stunning Punakha Dzong, which many consider one of Bhutan’s most beautiful dzongs! Built back in 1637 by the amazing Zhabdrung Ngawang Namgyal, the founder of Bhutan, this architectural gem is nestled at the meeting point of the Pho Chhu and Mo Chhu rivers.
As you step inside the dzong, you’ll be welcomed by intricately carved wooden doors, vibrant frescoes, and stunning whitewashed walls that sparkle in the sunlight. This place is not just an important administrative hub, but also a serene monastic complex. Be sure to wander through the breathtaking courtyards and temples, where you can discover the rich history and essence of this sacred site!
2. The Punakha Suspension Bridge: A Thrilling Walk
If you’re looking for a fun little adventure, the Punakha Suspension Bridge is an absolute must-see! Stretching around 160 meters, it’s one of the longest suspension bridges in Bhutan, and it’s got some amazing views of the gorgeous valleys and the Pho Chhu River down below.
Walking across this bridge is such a thrilling experience—you can really feel it sway gently under your feet! Plus, you’ll enjoy spectacular views of the nearby mountains and the bright greenery of the Punakha Valley. Don’t forget to pack your camera; this place is just begging to be photographed!
3. Chimmi Lhakhang: The Temple of Fertility
Just a delightful hike from Punakha, Chimmi Lhakhang is a charming little temple dedicated to the Divine Madman, Drukpa Kunley, who is celebrated for his quirky teachings and lighthearted take on Buddhism. This temple is particularly famous for its connection to fertility; couples hoping for blessings to grow their families often make a visit here.
The trek to Chimmi Lhakhang is a lovely 30-minute stroll through beautiful rice fields, giving you a peek into the everyday lives of the friendly locals. When you arrive, you’ll be greeted by a serene atmosphere where you can take part in rituals or simply enjoy the peaceful vibes around you. And don’t miss the chance to check out the many phallus symbols scattered around the temple, showcasing the unique cultural beliefs that make Bhutan so special.
4. Khamsum Yulley Namgyel Hike: A Nature Lover’s Paradise
If you’re an outdoor lover, you’ll absolutely adore the Khamsum Yulley Namgyel hike! It’s a wonderful way to soak in the beautiful scenery of Punakha. This relatively easy hike takes you through calm landscapes, lush greenery, and terraced fields before leading up to the breathtaking Khamsum Yulley Namgyel Chorten.
The chorten, sitting atop a hill, provides stunning panoramic views of the Punakha Valley and the majestic Himalayas in the background. This beautiful structure is crafted with intricate designs and adorned with colorful paintings that showcase various Buddhist deities and teachings. Take a moment here to relish the serene atmosphere and the awe-inspiring views, making it an ideal spot for some peaceful reflection and meditation.
5. Thrilling River Rafting Adventures
For those seeking an adrenaline rush, river rafting on the Pho Chhu River is an unforgettable experience. The river offers a range of rapids, making it suitable for both beginners and experienced rafters. Guided tours are available, providing all the necessary equipment and safety instructions.
As you paddle through the stunning landscapes, you’ll be surrounded by lush greenery, towering cliffs, and, occasionally, glimpses of local wildlife. The thrill of navigating the rapids combined with the serene beauty of the valley makes this an exhilarating adventure you won’t want to miss.
Travel Tips for Visiting Punakha
- Dress Modestly: As a predominantly Buddhist country, Bhutanese culture emphasizes modesty. Wear respectful clothing, especially when visiting religious sites.
- Stay Hydrated: Carry a refillable water bottle and stay hydrated, especially when hiking. The elevation and physical activity can dehydrate you quickly.
- Respect Local Customs: Be mindful of local customs and traditions. Always ask before taking photos of people or sacred sites.
- Plan Ahead: If you’re interested in river rafting or other adventure activities, it’s best to book in advance, especially during peak tourist seasons.
As you plan your journey to Bhutan, make sure to include Punakha on your itinerary. Its unique charm and the warmth of its people will leave an indelible mark on your heart, making it a destination you’ll cherish for years to come. Happy travels!
