EXCELLENT Based on 138 reviews Posted on Lucy H8 May 2026Verified OMSHA was the best!!! We had the most fabulous time with our guide Sonam and driver Tashi! We were busy with several experiences every day, and had nice comfortable lodging every night. I loved our opportunities to see how paper is made, rice is roasted, mandelas are drawn with such minute perfect brush strokes, and overall how Bhutanese people live. This trip was full of learning. I especially loved how Gross National Happiness informs all things in Bhutan. I highly recommend OMSHA for travel in Bhutan! Posted on Barbara A3 May 2026Verified Best Bhutan Trip Omsha Travel is a terrific operator in Bhutan. Hey there! If you’re planning a trip to Bhutan, you just have to check out Punakha, known as the “winter capital.” It’s such a lovely spot that combines stunning natural scenery, rich culture, and loads of exciting outdoor fun. There’s so much to do and see here! In this travel blog, we’ll dive into some must-visit places like the magnificent Punakha Dzong, the thrilling Suspension Bridge, the peaceful Chimmi Lhakhang, the stunning Khamsum Yulley Namgyel hike, and of course, the awesome river rafting adventures! Plus, we’ll share some handy tips on when to visit and essential travel advice to make your trip even better.
1. Punakha Dzong: The "Palace of Happiness"
Your journey to Punakha wouldn’t be complete without checking out the stunning Punakha Dzong, which many consider one of Bhutan’s most beautiful dzongs! Built back in 1637 by the amazing Zhabdrung Ngawang Namgyal, the founder of Bhutan, this architectural gem is nestled at the meeting point of the Pho Chhu and Mo Chhu rivers.
As you step inside the dzong, you’ll be welcomed by intricately carved wooden doors, vibrant frescoes, and stunning whitewashed walls that sparkle in the sunlight. This place is not just an important administrative hub, but also a serene monastic complex. Be sure to wander through the breathtaking courtyards and temples, where you can discover the rich history and essence of this sacred site!
2. The Punakha Suspension Bridge: A Thrilling Walk
If you’re looking for a fun little adventure, the Punakha Suspension Bridge is an absolute must-see! Stretching around 160 meters, it’s one of the longest suspension bridges in Bhutan, and it’s got some amazing views of the gorgeous valleys and the Pho Chhu River down below.
Walking across this bridge is such a thrilling experience—you can really feel it sway gently under your feet! Plus, you’ll enjoy spectacular views of the nearby mountains and the bright greenery of the Punakha Valley. Don’t forget to pack your camera; this place is just begging to be photographed!
3. Chimmi Lhakhang: The Temple of Fertility
Just a delightful hike from Punakha, Chimmi Lhakhang is a charming little temple dedicated to the Divine Madman, Drukpa Kunley, who is celebrated for his quirky teachings and lighthearted take on Buddhism. This temple is particularly famous for its connection to fertility; couples hoping for blessings to grow their families often make a visit here.
The trek to Chimmi Lhakhang is a lovely 30-minute stroll through beautiful rice fields, giving you a peek into the everyday lives of the friendly locals. When you arrive, you’ll be greeted by a serene atmosphere where you can take part in rituals or simply enjoy the peaceful vibes around you. And don’t miss the chance to check out the many phallus symbols scattered around the temple, showcasing the unique cultural beliefs that make Bhutan so special.
4. Khamsum Yulley Namgyel Hike: A Nature Lover’s Paradise
If you’re an outdoor lover, you’ll absolutely adore the Khamsum Yulley Namgyel hike! It’s a wonderful way to soak in the beautiful scenery of Punakha. This relatively easy hike takes you through calm landscapes, lush greenery, and terraced fields before leading up to the breathtaking Khamsum Yulley Namgyel Chorten.
The chorten, sitting atop a hill, provides stunning panoramic views of the Punakha Valley and the majestic Himalayas in the background. This beautiful structure is crafted with intricate designs and adorned with colorful paintings that showcase various Buddhist deities and teachings. Take a moment here to relish the serene atmosphere and the awe-inspiring views, making it an ideal spot for some peaceful reflection and meditation.
5. Thrilling River Rafting Adventures
For those seeking an adrenaline rush, river rafting on the Pho Chhu River is an unforgettable experience. The river offers a range of rapids, making it suitable for both beginners and experienced rafters. Guided tours are available, providing all the necessary equipment and safety instructions.
As you paddle through the stunning landscapes, you’ll be surrounded by lush greenery, towering cliffs, and, occasionally, glimpses of local wildlife. The thrill of navigating the rapids combined with the serene beauty of the valley makes this an exhilarating adventure you won’t want to miss.
Travel Tips for Visiting Punakha
- Dress Modestly: As a predominantly Buddhist country, Bhutanese culture emphasizes modesty. Wear respectful clothing, especially when visiting religious sites.
- Stay Hydrated: Carry a refillable water bottle and stay hydrated, especially when hiking. The elevation and physical activity can dehydrate you quickly.
- Respect Local Customs: Be mindful of local customs and traditions. Always ask before taking photos of people or sacred sites.
- Plan Ahead: If you’re interested in river rafting or other adventure activities, it’s best to book in advance, especially during peak tourist seasons.
As you plan your journey to Bhutan, make sure to include Punakha on your itinerary. Its unique charm and the warmth of its people will leave an indelible mark on your heart, making it a destination you’ll cherish for years to come. Happy travels!
